As I note in some of the commentary, things can change a lot in two years. It's entirely possible that the "same product" that I had such bad experience with two years ago, is actually very different today. While I avoid TDK products because they burned me with poor quality, users seeking cost-effective and reliable media would probably be better off giving more weight to more recent reviews (which might better reflect whatever they are currently putting in this package) and/or a site that tracks media quality, such as http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm (although they don't seem to be updating that one any more), where among many other details you can find that TDK-branded packages have included media actually manufactured by TDK, CMC, Moser Baer, and Philips.

My original review follows. FYI, I have no interest in TDK or any other media mfr other than as a user.

These disks are not made by TDK (they only make -R type) they are rebranded trash from CMC. I had 15% with obvious, naked-eye visible defects (delaminations and voids in the dye layer) and for the "good" ones needed to burn at a sluggish 4X to get a decent quality of burn. Having burned more than 1000 disks using various brands, I assure you - these are not a bargain, they are garbage. Unless, of course, you burn at slow speeds and don't ever use the outer 20% of a disk.

UPDATE [late 2006]: I have been re-reviewing the burn quality of the disks that I did use. I am now finding hundreds of thousands of parity errors on every TDK disk (vs a typical 2 to 4 thousand on good disks e.g. Sony). THESE ARE WITHOUT DOUBT THE WORST DVD MEDIA I HAVE EVER USED. ANYONE WHO ENTRUSTS THEIR DATA TO THIS GARBAGE IS DOOMED TO DISASTER IF THEY EXPECT TO BE ABLE TO READ THE DATA IN AS LITTLE AS A YEAR OR TWO.

I just wanted to tell people that after using TDK CDs and DVDs exclusively for many years with 100% reliability in Sony, Phillips and NEC DVD burners, the newest batch of TDKs I received was extremely disappointing. The new disks look completely different, the scratch resistant "label" side has been eliminated, and the blue dye used on the data side is darker than usual.

I did a search on the Internet and found that Imation bought the rights to the TDK DVD brand, and they must have closed down the former TDK factory and consolidated manufacturing. These are purely Imation disks now. My NEC burner had the worst problem with them. It wouldn't burn them at all. I updated the firmwire, and I am now able to burn them, but with mixed results. The burner will often eject some of the blank disks saying they're bad, but will later burn them after closing down and restarting Record Now. However, the "burn" is often not even, with circular differences in color like the rings of Saturn. The Phillips burners don't seem to have a problem with them. I haven't tried the Sony. The disks also no longer carry the "RW" logo (it doesn't stand for rewritable, it is the logo of the DVD+R consortium), so I guess Imation is not a member of the group.

Imation also bought the rights to make Memorex, HP, Sun, IBM, StorageTech and Exabyte DVDs, so I'm guessing that all of the disks are now basically the same now.

For the folks complaining that CMC Magnetics popped up in their burning software as the manufacturer of these disks, I've been told they make the aluminium blanks in the center of the disks and that a lot of companies buy them from CMC.

After being a loyal TDK customer dating back to my audio cassette and videocassette days, I'm now looking for a new DVD supplier because I can't trust these disks anymore.

first i read some of the reviews, but since i had good luck with the first 100 dvd's i purchase from amazon, well you can imagen what happend, i bought another 100 and im very sorry, so far y have a defect ratio of 50%, this means i burn 8 disc and got 4 costers, stay away from this product, also the real manufacturer of my batch is "DAXON", wich i dont know if whe can sue somebody, i tought i bought tdk, but not, im very disopointed, also amazon should so something about this, in other countries, they put the name of the manufacturer also, you actually know what your getting, for example, the brand states Verbatim but the are manufacturer by Taiyo, and you know this before you make the purchase, this kind of poor management is what kills companys.

fallow up: testing at diferent speeds i found out they work great at half speed (8x) and it takes arround 6 or 7 minutes to burn, wich is not bad
just in case somebody else has the same problem, you can try burning at a lower speed
